Typical Pest Control Case Studies

Wasps

Anyone working with Pest Control will have a host of stories about large wasp nests or nests in very strange places. Wasps really seem to upset people and they are the number one summertime pest to be dealt with.

My advice to anyone with wasps is to not attempt work yourselves, they pose a considerable risk and a professional should be called.

I have dealt with thousands over the years in many strange situations. I have removed them from bird nest boxes, rolls of old carpet, old pieces of stored furniture to toilet cisterns, but the bulk are found flying at gutter / soffit level. This being an entrance to a nest found in the attic or lower eaves level. Powder insecticide is normally blown onto this area and the wasps pick this up on their bodies and die off over the next twenty four hours.

One occasion I recall was a little different. Wasps had entered a wall of a cottage, they had pushed against blown plaster and the wall paper till a blister type shape had occurred, eventually like a blister it had burst, the bedroom filled with wasps.

I sprayed a flying insecticide aerosol to the room and entered to treat the nest, once kitted out properly. A knockdown fluid was sprayed to the hole in the wall, and the wall and the nest pulled out piece by piece. Order was restored; all that remained was for the householder to sweep up the bodies of some of the nest inhabitants.

This was an extreme situation; the wasps would not have caused such damage if dealt with earlier.
Always chose someone experienced and fully insured to deal with wasps, avoid the daft idea of setting fire to trees, or pouring petrol over them. These kinds of actions will ruin your garden, potentially be a threat to your house and are the actions of an amateur.

Bed Bugs

This is one pest definitely on the increase, the reason generally being because of the increase in travel worldwide that takes place nowadays.

Bed bugs are a serious nuisance and require thorough treatment. In the course of some ten minutes an adult bed bug will ingest seven times its own weight in blood. It will then go to its hiding place, digest the blood meal, mate and lay more eggs.

A female bed bug can lay 200 eggs at a rate of 4 – 5 per day, but the actual number laid depends upon the temperature, they do not lay any eggs at temperatures below 10 degrees centigrade.

Bed bugs are extremely unpleasant and can cause irritation; any treatment will usually involve several visits and a thorough dose of insecticide each time in all relevant places.

One of the most concerning instances of bed bugs dealt with was in a hotel of some 30 plus rooms. Various rooms had instances of bed bugs on the walls and ceilings. Several people had been bitten; the embarrassment and potential loss of customers was serious. Rather then pick and choose and only treat the rooms showing problems, I treated the whole premises, perimeter, cracks and crevices, treatment to all rooms and corridors; doses of insecticide behind beds and pictures over several visits. The dead insects were visible on the second visit I made but more insecticide was placed until no more evidence was seen or causing distress to customers. A professional bed bug treatment is not cheap, or should not be! This pest is not really a DIY proposition.

On another occasion in a domestic setting a customer was having problems with being bitten regularly. A friend had spent some time at his premises following worldwide travel. This premises was immaculate but it did not matter, the bed bugs had established themselves. Once again through spraying of the relevant insecticide took place, including the dismantling of a modern bed of tubular construction; bed bugs had entered the ‘tubes’ at the joints, insecticide was placed here. Finally over some three weeks the problem was solved. This customer can now get proper a nights sleep; we had finally got the result needed. Bed bug treatment must be thorough and repetitive.

Fleas

People very rightly get very upset about either having fleas or the very mention of them. However fleas are wrongly associated with filth and dirt. They are often to be found in very swish houses and of course they stem from the pets, namely cats and dogs found within.

Over the years I have noticed a definite decrease in the number of calls received for fleas. I think this is clearly because the products obtained from vets to treat animals are nowadays very good. If the pet is treated properly the problem stops with the animal and does not get the chance to be all over the carpet and flooring as well.

Flea numbers increase significantly when temperatures favour them. If a house is empty for a period of time and the previous occupier had a cat or two, any fleas left can be dormant for some time and will be triggered into action when the next potential blood meal walks into the house.

Once I was called to a terraced house that was in a very bad state of flea infestation. The property was up for rent but no one could view it because fleas were running rife.

When I opened the front door I could see fleas moving across the junk mail, disposable coveralls were needed, and when masked up I started spraying a residual insecticide of a wettable powder type all the way through the house. This infestation was so bad I later fumigated (gassed) the property as well, normally spraying is sufficient. Ten days or so later all was still. Avoid gimmick type traps and cheap products for use against fleas, stop the problem quickly and call someone with access to sensible chemicals, flea bites can cause considerable irritations.
